Detailed itinerary
Day 1: Entebbe to Bwindi
Day one of your 8 days Uganda gorillas and Rwenzori hiking safari begins with morning breakfast. Drive to Bwindi National Park in Kabale, Southwestern Uganda and on 8-9 hours’ trip, have enroute stop at Equator crossing and later lunch in Igongo Cultural Centre. Access Bwindi via Kabale route and upon arrival, check into your lodge.
Day 2: Mountain gorilla trekking in Bwindi Forest
Enjoy a hefty breakfast and drive to Bwindi offices where briefing on rules for gorilla trekking is always done. You will be led through the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest to track a gorilla family assigned to you by team from Uganda Wildlife Authority. Trek begins at 8:00am and it is a long adventure taking about 2-6 hours.
When you finally come across a family of these humble apes, one hour will be allowed for your shoot photos, learn about their behaviors. After, the park guide leads you back to the lodge to relax.
Your gorilla trip today will include a cultural tour in the Batwa community to interact with the Batwa pygmies, get entertained by their dances, music performance and learn more about their traditions.
Day 3: Bwindi to Nyakalengija – base of Mount. Rwenzori
Leave Bwindi after an early morning breakfast then drive to Kasese, connect to Nyakalengija. Check into your lodge to have dinner and night stay.
Day 4: Undertake a hike from Nyakalengija to Nyabitaba
Enjoy breakfast early morning and begin hiking from 1648m (Nyakalengija) to Nyabitaba 2651m. Navigate through dense bushes, grasses and hike up the rocks then cross river Mahoma. Expect enroute view of primates, mammals, birds and a lot more during the 4-5 hours hike to Nyabitaba Hut.
Day 5: Vacate Nyabitaba for John Matte
Have a leisurely breakfast and continue trekking via a forest to Kurt Shafer bridge. Climb up Nyamulejju rock for great views of Mt Stanley and Speke. Arrive at John Mate Hut to get excellent views of Margherita glacier (which is at elevation of about 5109m) and Mount Stanley.
Day 6: Descend from John Matte to Nyakalengija
Start descending from John Matte to Nyakalengija after breakfast. Enjoy views of giant lobelias then get to Nyakalengija early. Meet the driver guide, transfer to your lodge of choice to be served dinner and later overnight stay.
Day 7: Drive to Kampala-retire for night
Have breakfast early and later, drive back to Kampala from Rwenzori Mountains-Kasese. Retire for the night after dinner.
Day 8: Departure
Enjoy your breakfast and after, connect to Entebbe Airport to take a flight back home and this marks the end of your gorilla and hiking safari in Uganda.
